ABSTRACT

Alcohol has always been a component in the dietary pattern of human civilization. It is widely used in society for celebration and socialization. Alcohol abuse is among the most serious problems in public health characterized by uncontrolled drinking which causes physical and emotional dependence on alcohol. Chronic alcoholics are at a higher risk of developing vitamin B1 deficiency due to malabsorption, poor diet, and an increased demand for nutrition. Vitamin B1(Thiamine) is an essential nutrient required for the body's energy metabolism and proper functioning of the nervous system. A person who excessively consumes madya (alcohol) and then abruptly discontinues drinking and takes recourse to drinking excess madya once again, suffers from Madatyaya Upadrava(chronic alcoholism) that is Vikshay. Here is a case report of an alcoholic patient who ceased drinking and then resumed alcohol in large amounts. He presented with symptoms of generalized weakness, body ache, aphasia, confusion, fever (on and off), thirst, cough, headache, and numbness. The patient underwent a two-month treatment regimen that combined Satvavajay Chikitsa, Yoga, and Shaman Chikitsa involving Rasayana medications and procedures including snehan (Oleation), swedan (fomentation), nabhi puran (filling oil with navel), nasya (nasal administration), shirodhara (continuous flow of liquid on head) and basti (medicated enema). The intervention outcome showed relief from the aforementioned symptoms and improvement in both symptoms and GCS(Glasgow coma scale) score. This treatment approach aimed to promote vitality, longevity, and an overall sense of balance and well-being. There are not many corroborating cases being reported and managed with Ayurveda. This case report highlights transforming health through the cumulative effects of Rasayana medicines, panchakarma, and yoga.

ABSTRACT

A voltammetric sensor has been developed for the individual as well as simultaneous determination of xanthine (XA) and hypoxanthine (HX) based on an electroactive-polymerised layer of para toluene sulphonic acid and gold nanoparticles composite modified glassy carbon electrode ([p(PTSA)]/AuNPs/GCE)]. Under optimized conditions, an enhancement in the oxidation currents with well-separated and well-resolved peak position and a lower shift in the peak potentials were observed. By square wave voltammetry, the simultaneous determinations of XA and HX were achieved in the linear ranges 6.00 × 10-4 M to 3.00 × 10-6 M and 5.00 × 10-4 M to 1.00 × 10-5 M with detection limits of 4.09 × 10-7 M and 4.10 × 10-7 M, respectively. The mechanistic aspects were unveiled from linear sweep voltammetric studies and found that the electrode processes were diffusion-controlled. Finally, the sensor was successfully employed for the simultaneous determination of spiked amount of XA and HX in synthetic urine and serum samples.

ABSTRACT

Domestically, gas geysers are used in developing countries like India to supply hot water in bathrooms. These are of low economic value, with no requirement of electricity and easy installation, hence they are high in demand. A female patient of 14 year visited to a private Ayurved clinic on 27/12/2021 with complaints of difficulty in dysgraphia, dyslexia, dysphonia and fall (sometimes) while walking on uneven and unknown pathway. Four years ago, the patient landed into a vegetative state and was bed ridden, her condition was further diagnosed as Gas Geyser Syndrome. Here an effort has been put forth to reveal the concept of ayurvedic management adopted in a survivor of Gas Geyser Syndrome which is found to be effective. In Ayurveda the symptoms of Acute Gas Geyser syndrome can be correlated with Visha (Toxins) and its vishalakshana (Toxicity symptoms) wherein Murcha (Unconsciousness) and Sanyasa (Stage of Coma) are seen. The long term side effects of Gas Geyser Syndrome can be correlated with Vatavyadhi (Neurological disorders) as the stages of the disease manifestation presents with more neurological deficits. Ayurvedic intervention with internal medications along with the panchakarma procedures in the treatment of Gas geyser syndrome exhibits encouraging results which were seen in improving her cognition, memory and essential skills like writing, verbal communication, thinking skills, use of technology in socializing with the community.

ABSTRACT

For the first time, we report on a copper nanoclusters based fluorescence sensor for hemoglobin (Hgb). The aggregation-induced quenching of tannic acid capped copper nanoclusters' (TACuNCs) fluorescence by a Hgb-H2O2 mixture that mimics the Fenton's reagent is used here for the selective determination of Hgb. It is possible to effectively determine Hgb using this sensitive and cost-effective sensor in the linear range of 5.0 × 10-8 to 4.0 × 10-9 M with a detection limit of 5.6 × 10-10 M. The practical utility of the sensor is evident from the good recovery values obtained from Hgb spiked with artificial blood serum.

ABSTRACT

The rise of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) as well as the increase in spread of existing infections is threatening global economies and human lives, with several countries still fighting repeated onslaught of a few of these epidemics. The catastrophic impact a pandemic has on humans and economy should serve as a reminder to be better prepared to the advent of known and unknown pathogens in the future. The goal of having a set of initiatives and procedures to tackle them is the need of the hour. Rapid detection and point-of-care (POC) analysis of pathogens causing these diseases is not only a problem entailing the scientific community but also raises challenges in tailoring appropriate treatment strategies to the healthcare sector. Among the various methods used to detect pathogens, Electrochemical Biosensor Technology is at the forefront in the development of POC devices. Electrochemical Biosensors stand in good stead due to their rapid response, high sensitivity and selectivity and ease of miniaturization to name a few advantages. This review explores the innovations in electrochemical biosensing based on the various electroanalytical techniques including voltammetry, impedance, amperometry and potentiometry and discusses their potential in diagnosis of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases (Re-EIDs), which are potential pandemic threats.

ABSTRACT

A simple and selective 'turn-on' fluorescence sensor have been developed for the determination of xanthine (XA) based on glutathione (GSH) capped copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) as the fluorescent probe. The proposed sensor possess several advantages such as sensitivity, short analysis time and requires no sample pretreatment. The conditions for the performances of the sensor have been optimized and good linear relationship was obtained between concentration and relative fluorescence intensity in the concentration range 9.0[Formula: see text]10-3 M to 8.0[Formula: see text]10-5 M with a detection limit 6.0[Formula: see text]10-6 M. The mechanism behind the fluorescence enhancement may be ascribed to the binding of XA on the surface of GSH CuNCs. The sensor have been successfully applied to determine XA in spiked physiological samples.

ABSTRACT

The present article reports the efficiency of L-cysteine modulated copper nanoclusters (L-cys-CuNCs) as a fluorescent probe for the selective determination of naturally occurring bile pigments biliverdin (BVD) and bilirubin (BLR). These pigments were found to quench the fluorescence of L-cys-CuNCs through static processes. Under optimized conditions, the proposed strategy permitted the quantification of BVD and BLR in the range 4.00 × 10-5 to 5.00 × 10-7M and 1.00×10-5 to 1.00×10-6 M respectively with limits of detection 2.33 × 10-7M and 2.29 × 10-7 M. The practical utility of the developed sensor have been investigated in spiked blood and urine samples.
